In recent years, India has demonstrated remarkable nimbleness and initiative in forging economic ties with African countries. While Indian leaders have traditionally encouraged political relationships, economic considerations will underpin Indian policy going forward. India is hoping that a combination of soft power, historic links, and a record of supporting African causes will facilitate closer economic ties in a manner that is also beneficial to the continent. The Indian initiative is led by its private sector which wants access to Africa’s abundant natural resources and burgeoning markets. Indian companies have already invested substantially in sectors such as Oil & Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Petrochemicals, IT, Fertilizers and Infrastructure.
But Africa is not a homogenous market and presents significant challenges that can derail even the best-laid investment plans. The 10th Annual India Business Forum will focus on Indian corporate investments in Africa, trade and economic policies of its countries, challenges that investors face and resources that are available to them. With traditional links to both India and Africa, and extensive financial, legal and advisory expertise, London is well placed to facilitate this emerging partnership.
